Fishermen’s Energy is led by a strong management team that developed a deep understanding of offshore wind issues and has experience in both the power and marine sectors. The team members have collectively participated in thousands of megawatts of installed capacity amounting to billions of dollars of investment. Both the management team and the fishermen sponsors are backed by decades of marine knowledge and skills, including:
- Comprehensive knowledge of the sea-bottom;
- Experience handling heavy machinery in high winds and in rough seas;
- Control of key upland assembly docks, boats and key water access; and
- Dedicated, experienced, conscientious employees who make their living at sea already.
Daniel Cohen, Chairman of the Board
Mr. Cohen is a founder, principal and Chairman of the Board of Fishermen’s Energy, a fishermen owned offshore wind company, which is developing two offshore wind farms off of New Jersey. A long term goal of Fishermen’s Energy is to organize the fishing industry from Maine to South Carolina to develop offshore energy resources. Mr. Cohen is also a principal and Chief Executive Officer of Atlantic Capes Fisheries, Inc. an East Coast vertically integrated fishing company operating over 20 fishing vessels with facilities in New Jersey, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Mr. Cohen is personally committed to building natural resources companies pairing the twin goals of sustainable renewable resources in a scientifically managed marine environment with an economically sustainable fishing industry. To fulfill this commitment, Mr. Cohen has spent one third of his time, outside the company, in public roles, such as Chairman of the NFI-Scientific Monitoring Committee and the NFI-Clam Committee.
Mr. Cohen was recognized for this environmental leadership role by being awarded the “FINese Award for Responsible Fisheries” by the National Fisheries Institute, the largest association of seafood harvesters, processors, marketers and importers in the United States.
In 2009, Mr. Cohen was recognized for his environmental leadership by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities when he was named New Jersey’s “Clean Energy Advocate of the Year”.
Chris Wissemann, Chief Executive Officer
As General Manager of Freshwater Wind, Mr. Wissemann managed the development of the demonstration scale project in Lake Erie off of Cleveland in association with the Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation. Mr. Wissemann has been immersed in the offshore wind industry since 2004 as Founder of Deepwater Wind and past President of Garden State Offshore Energy.
Mr. Wissemann built the development team that successfully competed for franchises in Rhode Island and New Jersey to deliver utility-scale offshore wind farms (385 & 350 megawatts respectively). He spearheaded legislation in Rhode Island to create long-term power purchase agreements for a 30 MW Block Island wind farm, to be built in 2014 and a 385 MW Rhode Island Sound wind farm slated for construction in 2017.
Mr. Wissemann has 30 years of experience as developer in the domestic energy industry ranging from traditional power generation to energy efficiency with companies ranging from Turner Construction to Enron Energy Services. Mr. Wissemann earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Energy Studies from Brown University.
Aviv Goldsmith, Managing Director, Development
Mr. Goldsmith is president of Precursor Systems, Inc., a consulting firm specializing in development services for the independent power industry. He began in the IPP industry in 1984 and has a broad range of experience including renewable energy. His background includes project development, financing, project management, construction oversight, and operations management for a variety of projects in the Americas.
Mr. Goldsmith has a bachelors degree from Cornell University, a masters degree in energy systems from the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, and a MBA from Syracuse University. Mr. Goldsmith also has a 5th degree blackbelt in the traditional Japanese martial art of Aikido.
Andrew Gould, Managing Director, Strategy
Mr. Gould's is president of New York-based Arthur P. Gould & Co., merchant and investment bankers, and is a co-founder and principal of Fishermen's Energy. He has over 25 years of business-development and corporate finance experience with technology-based hardware, software, and service companies, including several innovative alternative energy companies (one publicly-traded, one acquired by GE, and one acquired by BP). His background includes seed and equity financing, all of the organizational, planning, budgeting, staffing, recruiting, business-development and marketing activities needed to support those financings and complex corporate partnering transactions pairing major international companies with innovative startups.
Mr. Gould has a bachelors degree from Yale University and a masters degree in finance and economics from New York University. Mr. Gould has extensive international experience and is multi-lingual.
Paul J. Gallagher, Sr., Chief Operating Officer/General Counsel
Paul J. Gallagher, Sr. joined Fishermen's in 2007 and is Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of Fishermen's Energy. He previously served as Vice President and General Counsel at the Atlantic County Utilities Authority from 2000-2012, where he was the Project Manager for the Jersey Atlantic Wind Farm, the first coastal, urban wind farm in New Jersey. Prior to joining the ACUA, he served as County Counsel for Atlantic County from 1995 to 2000 and prior to that he was the City Solicitor for Atlantic City from 1990-1995. Mr. Gallagher, who served as President of the Atlantic County Bar Association in 2003-2004, has practiced Law in Atlantic County over thirty years. He presently serves as a Trustee of the New Jersey State Bar Association, as a Vice President of the Greater Atlantic City Chamber and as a Director of English Creek Associates located in Hamilton, Bermuda. A 1982 graduate of Boston College Law School, he also holds an MBA from Clark University in Worcester, Massachusetts and a Bachelors Degree from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
William Shore, CFO/Treasurer
Mr. Shore has extensive experience in the origination, structuring, negotiation, and closing of financings and investments in renewable and conventional energy including debt, equity, mezzanine, and tax equity (leasing and partnerships). Mr. Shore has closed more than 80 transactions valued at over $18 billion.
Mr. Shore was a founder member of Abatis Capital, LLC and was Managing Director and Head of Debt Capital Markets for AllCapital (US) LLC, the U.S. subsidiary of the ASX-listed private equity investment firm Allco Finance Group. Mr. Shore created and managed the team that raised debt and tax equity financing for Allco Finance Group’s acquisitions and investments in energy infrastructure, transportation, and real estate in North America, including acquisition financing for the $1.6 billion Consolidated Edison power generation portfolio and tax equity financing for AllCapital Wind.
Mr. Shore is a graduate of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, where he received an MBA in Finance and a BS summa cum laude in Finance and Accounting.
Timothy Axelsson, Project Director
Mr. Axelsson grew up working in a family owned commercial fish business in Cape May. He is providing technical supervision and project management for the development, planning, engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning of offshore wind projects for Fishermen's Energy. Mr. Axelsson brings a diverse background and experience in marine operations in industries such as Offshore Oil & Gas Exploration, Subsea Intervention, and Submarine Cable Laying. He has worked as Master onboard technically sophisticated ships, such as offshore construction vessels, and as vessel operations manager for a fleet of cable laying vessels. Tim has put his more than 29 years of experience in the marine industry to work providing a leadership role in project management and international business consulting services. Prior to Fishermen’s Energy he worked for 3U Technologies and successfully executed and delivered international EPC submarine cable projects.
Mr. Axelsson attended the SUNY Maritime College at Fort Schuyler and graduated in 1982 with a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering and a US Third Mate license. He currently holds a US Master Unlimited license, GMDSS Radio Operator license, and is fully qualified to hold the position of Master in the US Merchant Marine. He was Honorably Discharged as a Lieutenant Commander in the US Naval Reserves in 1996 and is an active member of the Marine Technology Society.
Stephen O'Malley, Director Metocean Assessments
Mr. O’Malley is a civil engineer and oceanographer with over 20 years of experience designing, installing and servicing marine and weather data acquisition systems in estuarine, coastal and deepwater locations worldwide. His areas of expertise include physical oceanographic and meteorological measurements, design, integration and installation of real-time monitoring systems, field operations design and management, advanced applications of current measurement systems, bathymetric, side scan sonar and sub-bottom surveying, and oceanographic data processing and analysis.
Mr. O'Malley earned is Bachelors of Science in Civil and Environmental Engineering from the University of Massachusetts. He is a member of the American Association of Civil Engineers, and the American Association of Underwater Scientists.
Peter Hughes, Fishing Industry Coordinator
Mr. Hughes brings 20+ years of commercial fishing industry experience to
Fishermen’s Energy. His most recent position is the Fresh Sales Manager
of Atlantic Capes Fisheries, Inc., a leading harvester and marketer of
scallops and other seafood from the cold, fertile waters of the North and
Mid-Atlantic. Mr. Hughes has spent his career in various managerial
positions at Atlantic Capes.
Over his career, Mr. Hughes has been active on many fishing industry
committees, including the National Marine Fisheries Association, Garden
State Seafood Association and the Cape May Seafood Association.
